Animon Story is a game about kids and their monster friends evolving to overcome adversity. If you're a fan of monster collecting media like Pokemon and Digimon, then this TTRPG might just be the game for you.
Together you’ll go on adventures, solve problems, grow as friends, and maybe even save the world.
The Kids in these stories commonly fit into archetypal character roles, the sort you'd expect to find in this type of media, like the Little Kid, Wild Child and Bookworm. The monsters can vary a lot within the genre, and it’s encouraged for each group to decide together exactly how the monsters fit into their stories, but there are three rules to which Animon always abide:
And like the worlds of the aforementioned monster collecting media, there is a chance for your Animon to level up and evolve into a brand new form. But how does it work, and then play out at the gaming table? Let's dive in!
When a Kid meets their very first partner Animon, it's likely that the creature is going to be in its' Fledgling stage. These are the newborn types that hatch from an egg, and are usually on the smaller side without the unique features they in later stages. Doesn't mean they can't pack a punch in a fight, though!
Quite early on in your story, it is likely that the Animon will evolve to their Basic stage. This is the form that a Kids Animon will spend most of their time. They become more powerful at this stage and gain more distinctive features and a Signature Attack.

There are a few important things that a Kid and their Animon need to achieve before they can evolve further than their Basic form. They need need to increase their Bond, in order to move between levels, and in some cases your game master might stipulate that you need specific items (Moon Stone anyone?) or an Ani-Tool upgrade in order for this to work.
In any case, when these requirements are met, an Animon will Evolve at a time "When the Need is Great."
Evolution doesn't just happen in downtime, during a quiet moment of rest. It happens when the player and GM decides is most narratively satisfying, such as when their Kid is in danger and only their Animon can help!
After Basic, the the stages for Animon evolution are Super, Ultra and Giga.
Super Animon are much more powerful than Basic types, but take a lot more energy to maintain this form. If they gather enough energy, they can then move into the Ultra form, which only happens if you undergo special circumstances like visiting a place of power or interacting with a supernatural source of energy. Only for the brave, we think.
And then there's Giga. If you're a fan of Mega Evolutions in Pokemon, you might recognise his as similar to the ultimate stage which only the most powerful of Animon in your world will ever reach. It requires a truly unbreakable bond, or an unbelievable amount of energy.

Yes, they can! Any Animon can willingly return to one of its lower stages at any time, and this can happen if they are reduced to 0HP, or if they become too hungry or tired to maintain their higher Stage. It's important to care for the Animon you're responsible for, and likewise they'll care for you!
But wait, I want to create my own Animon, how do I make something brand new?
Well, obviously, the most difficult but less important part is to give the evolved stage a name. You can do that right? It's not going to be an agonising task like naming every other character in a TTRPG right? Yeah, you've got this!
You're also gonna want to decide the Classification and Element of this evolve stage, which will likely be the same as the Basic stage, unless there's a big reason for the change. An fire Animon is unlikely to evolve into a water based Animon, right? Unless....?
You will also redistribute the Stats, HP, Damage, Dodge and it's Initiative to make sure that it grows in power and ability for the no doubt intense battles facing it and your Kid.
Every Animon has a Signature Attack, and when they evolve, they'll get a brand new one too! This should have a different name, and might have a different Element and Effect too. That's up to you to decide what feels most appropriate for you and your Animon.
You also decide on a new Quality for the Animon, but to find out more, we recommend grabbing yourself a copy of the book to find out just how to go about this!
